Installing LinuxPPC 2000 on G3/500 (Pismo)
This page contains information on how I installed dual operating systems
(MacOS & LinuxPPC) on a new Macintosh G3/500 PowerBook (a.k.a. "Pismo"), a
so-called "New World ROM Machine."
No guarantee is made that this will work for any other configuration. In
fact, no guarantee can be made that this will work for the same
configuration, since MANY so-called "recipes" were encountered for
installing LinuxPPC 2000 on a Pismo PowerBook, but none of them worked
quite as stated. It is not known exactly why, but following other written
proceedures and so-called "recipes" for installing on New World ROM
Machines, installing on G4s, installing on Pismo PowerBooks specifically
even, just simply did not produce the exact results that were stated in
these recipes. Really. None.
Also described are the (successful) steps taken in installing and
configuring ybin, a useful boot loader for selecting which OS to boot
from.
Several HTTP and FTP links are given in the notes for required software.
All of this software can be obtained directly from me, and are listed below.

notes.
Download a postscript version, which is
half the number of pages; ideal for printing.
Perhaps you're looking for an answer to a specific problem. If you're
lucky, you might find it here. If you're really lucky, what I did might
even work for you. I hope you are really lucky. Here are a few specific
issues I ran in to.
There are lots of useful bits of information at the
linuxppc.com product updates website,
which is at
http://linuxppc.com/support/updates/product/2000.php3
Many of the problems I encountered were solved there, and so for those that
were simple I just reference their site.
Since HTML links can often move or disappear, I've tried to collect all of
the software mentioned in my installation notes and make it available right
here. Below are the original software locations, but if those change, you
can use the link beside them to download a copy right from my machine.
